COVID-19 Fall 2020-Winter 2021 Tuition & Fees FAQ

Fall 2020-Winter 2021 Tuition & Fees FAQ

Last Update: 1/12/2021

Q1. Will tuition or fees be reduced for remote classes or for classes that are moved to remote learning due to COVID-19?

No. The approved 2020-21 Tuition and Fees apply regardless of the method of instruction, including in the event instruction occurs remotely, or in alternative formats, for any part of the academic year. In the event non-mandatory fees, like class, lab or program fees, are substantially unconsumed or unutilized for the 2020-21 academic year due to COVID-19, decisions for refunding such fees will be made on a case-by-case basis within the school or college.

Q2. I am taking all classes remotely. Can the COVID-19 Fee be waived?

No. Students taking all classes remotely will pay the COVID-19 fee; it cannot be waived. For more information on COVID-19, please visit the Campus Maize & Blueprint FAQs.

Q3. What is covered under the COVID-19 Fee? (Updated 1/12/21)

The $50 COVID-19 fee is used to help cover the costs associated with student safety, including testing equipment and supplies, testing and contact tracing staff and programs, protective equipment, and heightened asymptomatic testing for students accessing or remaining on campus.

While not directly covered by the COVID-19 fee, the university has also expanded mental health and well-being services for the academic year. This includes enhancing Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) with eight additional counselors to reduce wait times and shift services to a virtual format. Additional wellness services such as Wolverine Wellness and Recreational Sports facilities also continue to be available to the U-M community.

Q4. If I am attending all classes remotely or otherwise unable to use the union or recreational facilities on campus, do I have to pay the University Unions & Recreational Sports Improvement fee?

Yes. The University Unions and Recreational Sports Improvement Fee is not a use fee, but was advocated by students and designed to offset the cost of structural improvements of these buildings, such as the recent deep renovation of the Michigan Union. This fee is assessed to all University of Michigan students regardless of whether they are on campus or learning remotely. It was instituted in Summer 2014.

Q5. I am an international student taking all classes remotely. Will I have to pay the $500 international fee?

Yes. This is a fee assessed to all enrolled international students with active or initial I-20 or DS-2019 forms, even if taking all classes remotely.
